In February of 2015, the Federal Government amended Canada’s WHMIS legislation to reflect the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Classifying and Labeling Chemicals. GHS is intended to align the classification and labeling systems used worldwide. As a result of the recent changes here in Canada, there will be two different classification and labeling systems in use by suppliers until June 1, 2018. Full compliance with WHMIS 2015 is required by December 1, 2018.
The Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) is helping to prepare all employees in the hospitality industry for this change by providing online training for WHMIS (2015) free to both members and associate members!
AHLA Safety Subscribers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to train their workers for free and on demand!
Click here for access to WHMIS 2015. Employees will use their AHLA Safety Training Portal log in and password to access the WHMIS 2015 site. (Ensure there are no special characters in your password or the WHMIS 2015 site will not work).
Employers are also responsible to provide workers with job-specific training delivered in the workplace to cover the specific chemicals in use at the property. Job-specific WHMIS training is required to ensure workers understand the specific hazards of the products to which they may be exposed, and the controls in place to protect their health and safety when handling these products.
