This course is designed to introduce leaders in the Hospitality industry to the key concepts and requirements of occupational health and safety in the workplace.

This course examines the fundamental concepts and techniques for leading and incorporating safety culture in your workplace. Unlike other AHLA courses offerings, this course provides a general overview of health and safety management systems while incorporating the leadership concepts and ideas to improve the “buy” in from all levels of the organization.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives of the course are:

  1. To provide a historical context for the integration and interaction of elements of occupational health and safety.
  2. To recognize the concepts of leadership in the role of creating and embracing a Health and Safety Culture.
  3. Identify the challenges and barriers facing workplaces in implementing and maintaining a health and safety management program.

Who should take the course?

  • Anyone who wants to increase their knowledge of workplace health and safety. 
  • General manager/senior manager(s). As part of the Hospitality Safety Leadership Certificate program, the general manager/senior manager(s) are required to participate and successful complete the course in order to meet the program requirements for Level 1.

Course Prerequisite

There are no prerequisites recommended for this course.

Duration: 6 hours

Please note: It is expected that all students will actively participate in the discussion and in class exercises to ensure that an understanding and learning objectives for the course are achieved. Minimum passing grade is 80%.
